What is a 3D Digital Twin™ ?
The Matterport™ 3D Pro camera system utilizes 6 HDR cameras to accurately map (scan) any physical space such as buildings, commercial office spaces, or residential homes. Once the 3D scanning is completed, each scan is “stitched” together to create what is referred to as an immersive “Matterport 3D Digital-Twin™” model. The Showcase typically becomes available for viewing in about 2-3 hours after the scanning is completed. The 3D Digital-Twin™” model is an accurate depiction of the visual information which, when viewed, allows you “walk-through” the physical space as if you were there. The Matterport Digital-Twin™” model itself has three separate views; “Walk-thru” view, “Dollhouse” view and the “Floor-plan” view.
Regardless of which view you select, your able to examine the floor plan, move to multiple levels, or step outside of the space to view a 360 degree layout of any portion of the model. No 3rd party software to install or video player is needed to view the models. With an immersive 3D Digital-Twin™” model, you’re able to do what the traditional two-dimensional photographs or video recordings can’t i.e. “Bring the entire scene to life”. And even more impressive is the viewer gets to navigate throughout the 3D Digital-Twin™” model.
As a baseline of understanding, a 3000 sq. ft. building takes approximately 1 -2 hrs. to complete and requires approximately 75 -100 scans. Each scan takes approximately 1-2 minutes to complete. Depending on the size of the room, obstacles/complexities, or building configurations, multiple scans may be required of each area. (The more the scans completed of each area, the higher degree of detail is embedded into the model.) Showcase models can also include the interiors of vehicles, vessels or aircraft.
What do you get with a 3D model?
The Matterport™ 3D camera system not only creates an immersive high-resolution Digital-Twin™” model that can be viewed by anyone you choose, it also creates high-resolution (1920 x 1080) jpg images. When a Digital-Twin™” model is created, an “.OBJ” file is also created along with a “BIM” file. These files allow anyone with a CAD program to import the “OBJ” file and create CAD drawings that match to scale the 3D model.
When using a Matterport 3D Digital-Twin™” model as a template, you can easily create a traditional black and white floor plan using Microsoft Visio, Floorplanner.com, or similar software.
Using a 3D Digital-Twin™” model for your website
The Matterport 3D Digital-Twin™” model uses WebGL, the modern standard for 3D content on the web. On desktop computers, WebGL is supported by the latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer. On mobile devices, WebGL is supported by Safari for iOS 8 and Chrome for Android. Options
Video Consultants NW provides several options depending on the client’s needs. For real estate, hospitality, and private parties, you may only need a 3D Showcase model to promote your business on a website or share privately.
For our Judicial customers, creating a 3D Digital-Twin™” model may involve more than just creating a 3D Showcase model. Using the model as an illustration of the events, using still images (take by a third-party) and overlaying them into a tutorial video for courtroom presentations, or creating a complete package for demonstrative purposes (in a video format) may be one of several options available. (See Professional Services)
For the Construction and Insurance Industry, having multiple 3D Digital-Twin™” model of the same property maybe something to consider. Creating a showcase for each phase of construction that can be viewed by the client, the banker, the inspector may be just the solution that provides everyone a time-saving trip to the site or kept long-term as a “source of record” years down the road.
Pricing
Obtaining a quote is free… however, since each physical space is different in shape, size, floor levels, options, and location, getting an accurate free quote is best. But, to peak your curiosity, a typical 2000 SF model will cost approximately $100.00 per 1000 sq ft. That’s around $200.00! For obvious reasons, the options you select, location of the site, hazards, and the application of the 3D model itself (i.e. its intended use) can change the pricing plan.
With the advent of the Matterport™ 3D camera system, creating an immersive 3D high-resolution Digital-Twin™” model, images, and Point Cloud data (Textures, Mesh, and Color) for CAD programs such as REVIT and 3D MAX Studio, has never been easier, faster, or more affordable!
